Dr. Thierry Slot is an Azrieli Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Chemistry at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology under the supervision of Prof. David Eisenberg. He studies novel catalytic materials for nitrogen fixation – one of the most important and pervasive challenges in chemistry today. His current research aims to push the boundaries of electrochemical synthesis of ammonia and nitric acid, with the ultimate goal of building a self-contained electrolyzer that can make these chemicals from air using only electricity and water.

Thierry was born in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. He earned two BSc degrees (chemistry and pharmacy) from Utrecht University before completing his MSc in chemistry at the University of Amsterdam. He then completed his PhD in heterogeneous catalysis (cum laude) at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Prof. Gadi Rothenberg and Prof. Shiju Raveendran. His research unraveled the mysteries of confinement chemistry by altering the surface structure of various catalytic materials including MAX phases and MXenes. He has published 15 peer-reviewed papers and invented a new device to study the kinetics of gas-producing reactions, combining his three passions: chemistry, electronics, and 3D printing. He also gained international experience, spending three months at Fudan University in Shanghai under the supervision of Prof. Hualong Xu. In 2021, he spent a year working on stimuli-responsive liquid crystal elastomers at Eindhoven Technical University with Dr. Danqing Liu and Prof. Dirk Broer. In his spare time, Thierry likes to play the piano and organizes workshops on 3D printing and electronics for our younger generation of aspiring scientists.
